CHAPTER EIGHT

Maia

The times when he isn’t with me are the hardest.

I don’t care about being kept in a cell underground or that the bed isn’t comfortable or that it’s a bare room with nobody to talk to and no chance of escape. If I could escape, I wouldn’t.

Not having him here, for all his sudden rages and cruelties, the kind gentleness, is hard to bear.

I love him.

Axel saved me. He came for me when nobody else would, he spent so much on me that I could never hope to repay him. He brought me here to his home.

I’d do anything for him, be at his beck and call, take away all the pain and hurt I see darkening his eyes.

He doesn’t come to me the next day, but I find bags of clothes when I wake. I gasp as I finger through the items. Designer dresses, tank tops, leggings, jeans, underwear and shoes. And dance wear, so soft and flexible that when I try it on, I forget I’m wearing anything at all.

I try the cell door and find it unlocked. I’m able to walk down the corridor, to the shower room and into a small cellar where there’s a stack of comic books and a table covered with a selection of food.

Staring at the comic books makes a shiver run through me. He could have picked anything, but he picked that? How can that be a coincidence?

I finger through the stack, seeing Hulk, Spider-man, Batman, Wonder Woman. And they’re not second hand castoffs that I have to brush clean of trash, either. They’re limited editions and first issues in sealed packets.

Drawing a deep, unbelieving breath, I force myself to face the food.

I say a silent prayer that it’s real. That this isn’t some dream I’m about to wake up from.

This is food I’ve never even dreamed of, that I didn’t know existed.

Each bite is tastier than the last. Each arranged in a way that my mouth waters in anticipation. I eat so much I only stop when I start to feel sick. Even then, I want to carry on, not knowing when I’ll have this again.

I read through comic after comic, then go back to the food, savoring delicious morsel after delicious morsel. When I have to go to bed, it’s clutching two of the books and an unopened packet of potato chips.

Then the following day I wake to find Axel framed in the cell doorway, staring at me. It should make me uncomfortable, but it doesn’t. I feel safe with him there, protecting me from the world.

Not wanting him to leave, I stay still, pretending to fall back asleep, closing my eyes and listening to him breathing until finally I do slip into a deeper, more satisfying slumber than I’ve experienced in my life.

He’s gone when I wake, but I find a new selection of food in what I’ve come to think of as my dining room. Hot this time, and with new dishes that smell like heaven. I devour it greedily, stopping this time when I start to feel full.
